I watched a few Ultraman movies. And I'm putting my scattered thoughts all in this post. Spoilers abound (even for the end of Dyna and sort of for Mebius and Cosmos).

Ultraman Saga and The Ultra Galaxy movie: ExpandMirai; Future Earth. )

And, since I'm too lazy to make a separate post, I might as well have this tagged on, even though I wrote about this movie way after I watched the two movies above and it has nothing to do with them. Wait, that isn't true. Ultraman Zero is in it, so I guess it has something in common with the rest of the movies, after all... (Oh, Taro and Mebius also appear, sort of. ^^;;; Yes, I mean the fusion. I would scream with joy if it's them in the flesh.)

Ultraman Orb the Movie: ExpandI actually like this movie more than I made it sound under here. Lots of random spoilers. )
sennetari: Little sailor in a box (sailor)
(Ah, this turned out sillier than I intended. No series before Tiga because I can't remember the ones I'd seen very well. And some entries may have spoilers.)

Tiga: ExpandStatue )
Dyna: ExpandForms )
Gaia: ExpandEarth )
Cosmos: ExpandUniversal )
Nexus: ExpandBonds )
Max: ExpandAlternate )
Mebius: ExpandTimeline )

Z: ExpandDimensions )
So I don't know where all the above came from. (Gee, surely the Ultras don't talk like that. At least, I really hope Tiga and Dyna don't.) I only meant to talk about how I totally prefer human forms (or the form where the Ultra side is silent) over human hosts, but now I am not so sure. Some host/Ultra relationships are amazing, after all.

(Just seems like a silly disclaimer, but I've seen all of these series. If I don't mention something obvious (probably a lot of them), it means I either forget about it, don't want to be repetitive, or don't want to for spoiler reasons.)
sennetari: Little sailor in a box (sailor)
Well, obviously every human host/form keeps quiet about the fact that they are Ultras. (Why do they? Why can't they tell people?) My question is more about other people. Do they remain clueless until the finale (or even beyond)? Or do they figure it out somehow?

Just going to do this with new series. I don't remember/still haven't seen some series before Tiga (and I thought, apart from very few exceptions, they usually didn't guess about the hero back then either). This is going to spoil the series mentioned, so if you don't want to know, you really should not proceed.

(Okay, you probably wonder who this person is who went silent for almost seven years. It's more likely that I'm talking to myself here, however. Anyway, went out for the first time this month on Friday and found that the outside world is still the same, so maybe I'll start posting again. Which might not be sustainable since I still don't really want to watch anything other than the Ultras, but never say never.)

Doing this from Ultraman Tiga onward, here are my personal opinions on transformation items the Ultra hosts use. (No, I don't own any, more's the pity.) Not counting the secondary Ultras, if any. I would comment on the transformation scenes themselves, but most of them aren't that memorable, except the three-century-long ones, only because I was seriously tempted to skip them. But I'll say I mostly prefer that the Ultra hosts don't shout out their Ultra names while transforming (except Mebius. He can shout his name all he wants).

Spoilers, maybe. But nothing that will ruin the series, I hope. So I'm not separating the cut into individual shows. The Ultras are listed in the order their series aired, as far as I know.

ExpandToys and more toys )

So maybe I should say something about the human form or host of each series (the main ones and Zero's)? I don't know, but let's just do it, then. I like to have excuses to talk about my favorite characters. (That means I probably might not limit myself to talking about the hosts/human forms only.) Unlike the above section, there are lots of spoilers and I don't mark them. Uneven length. For some I have paragraphs, and for some I have three sentences. How much I write is usually no indication of how much I like the host and/or the other characters, however.

Tiga: ExpandTake Me Higher )
Dyna: ExpandAlly of Justice )
Gaia: ExpandBeat on, Dream on )
Cosmos: ExpandSpirit )
Nexus: ExpandHero )
Max: ExpandFrom Galaxy Faraway )
Mebius: ExpandAdorable, Adorable, Adorable )
UltraSeven X: ExpandPay Money for My Pain )
Zero: Expand20,000 years too early )
Ginga: ExpandFuture Ultraman )
X: ExpandCyberspace Ultraman )
Orb: ExpandWanderer Ultraman )
Geed: ExpandAdorkable Ultraman )
R/B: ExpandUltraman Brothers )
Taiga: ExpandTri-Squad Ultraman )
Z: ExpandUltra Nerd )
And how much I enjoy a series is almost always directly proportional to how much I like its main character. I think only Nexus actually breaks that mold (but then I practically like most of the dunamists, so maybe there's that). I won't say which series I like more because I don't like to play favorites, though perhaps you can tell? I'm not all that objective anyway.

(Wow, after never wrote about it like in forever (pretty much been keeping up with it, though; currently at episode 42), I wouldn't have guessed that Wizard would sort of bring me back here.)

Let me say something, since I'm going to burst* without writing it all down. And I know I probably should take my reply to the place the discussion originated, but I don't like to confront people, so it's here in my own corner of the web.

(*Not literally, of course. But I'm the type to exaggerate my feelings like that. I wonder if my frequent use of hyperbole might get annoying sometimes... Being close to my own writing, I never see a problem -- sometimes I'm even a bit confused that I'm taken literally when I don't intend to be serious at all. Well, when that happens, it's probably my fault for not being clear. )

ExpandShunpei and Nitou. No specific spoilers, but cut just in case. )

It has been five years, but I used to write little comments on Ultraman Dyna episodes.

Episodes 1-7, Episodes 8-24, Episodes 25-36

Well, I found my notes for the rest of the episodes, so I'm going to post them up.

The following notes are not recent, so I can't actually remember much of what happen in the episodes, let alone if my notes are all that accurate. In any case, there will be spoilers.

ExpandEpisodes 37-48 )

And I have something longer for the next two episodes: ExpandEpisode 49 ) ExpandEpisode 50 )

ExpandEpisode 51 (a lot shorter comment than the previous two episodes). )

Not sure what happened, but, instead of most other series I mentioned in the previous entry, I somehow ended up starting Ultraman Gaia. And while I still think it is the best Heisei Ultraman series, Gaia is definitely slower in drawing me in than, say, Ultraman Dyna.

ExpandThe main character in the first four episodes. )

Not about Gamu anymore, but there are not so few familiar faces (to me) in Ultraman Gaia. So far there is Kougami's actor (from Kamen Rider OOO) as Chief Tsutsumi. And perhaps he isn't around in the first four episodes, but Captain Serizawa's actor is the third pilot of Team Falcon. And and and Hassei Takano (Kamen Rider Raia) as Fujimiya.

I seem to be in an Ultraman-watching mood lately. It has been a while since I last felt this way.

ExpandPreparing for Ultraman Saga, sort of. )

Ah, this is too disjointed an entry. I don't even know what I'm trying to say here other than I probably won't have much time for other stuff on my too long to-watch list now that I'm preoccupied with the Ultras (specifically Dyna, Tiga, and Cosmos). I do wonder how long this phase will last, however, since I can very easily get bored (one of the reasons I can't really follow weekly stuff as they air***).

(***The only exception nowadays is Kamen Rider Wizard. I tried stocking up on episodes, but, nope, can't let a week pass without watching that week's episode. Doesn't help that I personally feel the series is only getting better and better (probably not a very popular opinion, but that's totally fine with me).)

This is a little expansion on what I wrote as a comment in my previous entry on Ultraman Nexus. For spoiler reason, I would mark out names whenever I outright state them (most of the time, only when it might not be clear who I'm talking about). Most of the time I consider a couple canon only if there seem to be real compelling evidences that the show creators like me to think so. That said, there is no guarantee of accuracy of this list since I'm mostly going by memory, and I haven't seen some of these series recently.

ExpandCanon couples in Tiga, Dyna, Gaia, Cosmos, Nexus, Max, Mebius, UltraSeven X, and Ultra Galaxy... )

Open to corrections different opinions (and corrections on any misspelling on names, since I'm a bit tired to go look them up). But yeah, my definition of a canon couple might be too strict...

(Only one canon couple icon, I clearly have to get more...)

So I re-watched the new Ultraman movie because I just got a soft sub (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] yamatoforever for telling me that sub exists for the new Ultraman movie). Not a hundred percent certain, but I believe this soft sub comes from UltramanLah, courtesy of Psyke. I'm passing it along in case someone else is looking for sub (though everyone who needs sub probably has already gotten it by now).

Well, since I already post, here are a little more thoughts on the movie:

ExpandThoughts (spoilers) )

(Torrent link for the raw, in case I'm not the last person to have seen this movie. Actually, I want the DVD, but I don't know when I can get it. :( I especially want the subtitles (the first movie has them, so this one should, too); Japanese subtitles are better than nothing.)

I didn't even plan to talk about this movie now (catching a few words in every three sentences is not good enough), but well, I have some thoughts anyway after seeing it this afternoon. This is done without reading a translation (if one exists), so mistakes are all my own.

ExpandThoughts/Spoilers )

I'm sure I'd forgotten something. Oh well, I think I'll write more when I actually understand the dialogue... (And, yes, I know it's my journal, but I'm sorry if I sound too annoying about wanting to understand the movie. It's no pressure and no hurry for the subtitles. I simply find it frustrating for me personally when I try to learn Japanese and don't have much to show for it yet.)
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Weird Purple)
I should have a far more pleasant entry to write on the first anniversary of MEBIUS' ending, but more info on the new movie doesn't seem like very good news.

(This space was originally for what I really wanted to say.)

Expand...But here are some random observations instead. Possible spoilers. )
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Fake Green)
Finished Dyna, so I've been watching Gaia. Man, this show is not subtle at all with its messages. In fact, I think it's more preachy than Cosmos. Basically, humans are the cause of everything bad happening on this earth, the reason evil creatures appear, the reason normally placid monsters attack Earth. ExpandMore... )

ExpandI like these series (see tags), but I don't think they beat Gaia as an almost perfect series )

Dyna 25-36

Kind of got interrupted this afternoon, so, continuing my very non-sense comments on the Dyna episodes:

ExpandUltraman Dyna 25-36. There might be spoilers since I'm not coherent enough to pick them out. )
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Default)
Well, yesterday was a rare day I didn't go out (and everyone else was using the only computer ^^;), so I watched more Dyna. The following is a non-sense list on the episodes similar to the one I made last time. This is mostly to remind me which episode is which.

ExpandDyna episodes 8-24. I don't really give enough information for spoilers (if any) to make sense. )

ExpandAsuka's actor )

ExpandOne of the reasons I don't usually try to recommend a show. )

With all that said, though, I think people should at least watch Dyna episode 13. That is, if they don't mind a hero who doesn't seem very heroic. (Well, I suppose I could be more specific, but I tend to make things look worse than they are.)
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Cold Blue Texture)
I seem to have gone through a few phrases, (Heisei) Ultraman-wise, these past few weeks. First was Tiga, next was Cosmos, and now is Dyna. At this rate, I would probably watch Gaia next. (And if I seem to have forgotten Mebius lately, it's simply because I don't have most of the translated episodes with me at the moment. And I would rather not bother anyone asking about direct download.)

ExpandAbout Ultraman Dyna and its first seven episodes. Not really spoiling anything. )

EDIT: Apparently one needs to register with the forum first before accessing these links.

Maybe some people have already seen it, but I just came across this post sharing Ultraman Dyna, Ultraman Gaia, and Ultraman Max episodes at HJU. With my internet connection being what it is, I can't confirm the quality or anything about these episodes, but it is an alternative to buying if you can use (and don't hate) Veoh.

ExpandInspired by Cosmos TV Series: something I haven't seen much in other Ultra shows. )

Anyway, since I've just finished with Cosmos (maybe more specific thoughts on the episodes might be forthcoming, but I'm getting lazy), I watched a random episode of Ultraman Dyna, for a change of atmosphere. Completely by coincidence (since I don't remember Dyna episodes), it is a sequel to a second Gazoto episode of Tiga.

ExpandDyna 19. Perhaps a slight spoiler that won't make much sense anyway without context. )

And yes, I believe I owe replies to a few people. Please be patient. I'll get to them when I can.
