sennetari: Little sailor in a box (sailor)
Well, obviously every human host/form keeps quiet about the fact that they are Ultras. (Why do they? Why can't they tell people?) My question is more about other people. Do they remain clueless until the finale (or even beyond)? Or do they figure it out somehow?

Just going to do this with new series. I don't remember/still haven't seen some series before Tiga (and I thought, apart from very few exceptions, they usually didn't guess about the hero back then either). This is going to spoil the series mentioned, so if you don't want to know, you really should not proceed.

Tiga: Take Me Higher )
Dyna: Ally of Justice )
Gaia: Group Hugs )
Cosmos: EYES on you )
Nexus: Secret )
Max: Hero )
Mebius: Forever )
UltraSeven X: Pay Money for My Pain )
Ginga: Small Town )
Ginga S: Bigger Town )
X: Musketeers )
Orb: Vagabond )
Geed: Legacy )
R/B: Family )
Taiga: Teamwork )
Z: Torch )

I just re-read a manga where the hero hid his identity behind a mask and a wig and his love interest realized it was him from his voice alone (and he spoke only one line or two then). (She kept it a secret so he was still clueless and thought she didn't know.) It makes me wonder why most tokusatsu heroes could get away with not being recognized while not really doing anything to disguise their voices, or, for that matter, their speech patterns (no, I don't think simply changing from 'ore' to 'watashi' really counts). (Ultras don't usually speak much, and when they do, they seem to be pretty selective as to whom they direct their voices to, so okay, they are unlikely to get caught out by their voices alone.)

I missed Mebius's voice. )

Life around here has slowly gone back to normal, so maybe I might post more than one post every four months...

Haven't been watching much toku or anything lately. (More than half a year behind on the weekly stuff.) I have the Ultra Galaxy movie, which I still haven't watched since I haven't really seen Ultra Galaxy, and I'm afraid I might be lost if I don't catch all the references (well, more like I don't want to get spoiled, at all).

Seiun Kamen Machineman )

I'll probably write more on Machineman, but that's all I have for now...

EDIT: Yeah, forgot, a subbed first episode of Machineman (not my link), in case anyone is interested in checking this series out, but I have to say I might be the last person to find out that it has been subtitled at all.

EDIT 2: (Um, next time I'll try one post per one show. And this would be the last edit I make, hopefully.)
Ah, some first season Ultra Galaxy subs (probably HK subs) actually exist (well, I've been out of touch for so long), so I guess I'll at least try watching the first few episodes, and will see how things go from there...

(It seems like this is the last remotely think-y post that can be teased out of me in a while. Oh well. I can't decide if this is a good or bad thing.)

I look at stuff I enjoy reading and/or watching, and find majority of them dealing with secret identity/other identity, whether by real physical transformation or just plain old disguise or simply a case of mistaken identity--where character X is thought to be someone else, whether by deliberate deception (not so fond of this type for mistaken identity), or something that simply happens because the events sort of lead to it.

Anyway, got inspired by some comments in a comm; at least a few things I like about secret identity stories/series. This post is not series-specific, hopefully, though, to be fair, I would have to note that the comm I mention is fandom-specific.

lies and disguises )

I guess this is the big reason I like the Japanese language. )

Conclusion to all this? I have too much fun seeing character X trying to keep his/her two identities straight, be it by the language or manners or anything else. (My favorite character has two cell phones--for each of his identities. :)

Maybe a future post, if I ever get around to making sense of what I have written. )

I'm currently watching Ultraman Cosmos TV series (I'm up to episode 44 at the moment. What can I say? It's very addictive, though I think it's probably an acquired taste), and it occurs to me that Musashi doesn't seem to be able to conceal his secret identity very well. I wonder why he bothers to hide it at all. His personality seems the type, if not to boast, to mention what he does. He constantly says things like he would not run away, he needs power, strength, etc., both to himself and to other people.

Questions on secret identities. )

Yup, my subject line is pathetic.

On a more serious note, the following was originally written as a response to a forum post. I'm just too shy to post in that forum (which I never once posted in), so I'm putting my thoughts here instead, albeit with some edited wordings.

Spoilers for Mebius if you haven't seen (or don't know what happens in) episode 29 or anything thereafter. )

Not that it makes much sense without reading under the above cut, but I try to talk about tokusatsu heroes in general. )
