sennetari: Little sailor in a box (sailor)
(Ah, this turned out sillier than I intended. No series before Tiga because I can't remember the ones I'd seen very well. And some entries may have spoilers.)

Tiga: Statue )
Dyna: Forms )
Gaia: Earth )
Cosmos: Universal )
Nexus: Bonds )
Max: Alternate )
Mebius: Timeline )
UltraSeven X: World )
Zero: Shining )
Ginga: Spark )
X: Quantum )
Orb: Dark )
Geed: Fanboy )
R/B: Crystals )
Taiga: Bracelets )
Z: Dimensions )
So I don't know where all the above came from. (Gee, surely the Ultras don't talk like that. At least, I really hope Tiga and Dyna don't.) I only meant to talk about how I totally prefer human forms (or the form where the Ultra side is silent) over human hosts, but now I am not so sure. Some host/Ultra relationships are amazing, after all.

(Just seems like a silly disclaimer, but I've seen all of these series. If I don't mention something obvious (probably a lot of them), it means I either forget about it, don't want to be repetitive, or don't want to for spoiler reasons.)
sennetari: Little sailor in a box (sailor)
Well, obviously every human host/form keeps quiet about the fact that they are Ultras. (Why do they? Why can't they tell people?) My question is more about other people. Do they remain clueless until the finale (or even beyond)? Or do they figure it out somehow?

Just going to do this with new series. I don't remember/still haven't seen some series before Tiga (and I thought, apart from very few exceptions, they usually didn't guess about the hero back then either). This is going to spoil the series mentioned, so if you don't want to know, you really should not proceed.

Tiga: Take Me Higher )
Dyna: Ally of Justice )
Gaia: Group Hugs )
Cosmos: EYES on you )
Nexus: Secret )
Max: Hero )
Mebius: Forever )
UltraSeven X: Pay Money for My Pain )
Ginga: Small Town )
Ginga S: Bigger Town )
X: Musketeers )
Orb: Vagabond )
Geed: Legacy )
R/B: Family )
Taiga: Teamwork )
Z: Torch )
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Default)
(Okay, you probably wonder who this person is who went silent for almost seven years. It's more likely that I'm talking to myself here, however. Anyway, went out for the first time this month on Friday and found that the outside world is still the same, so maybe I'll start posting again. Which might not be sustainable since I still don't really want to watch anything other than the Ultras, but never say never.)

Doing this from Ultraman Tiga onward, here are my personal opinions on transformation items the Ultra hosts use. (No, I don't own any, more's the pity.) Not counting the secondary Ultras, if any. I would comment on the transformation scenes themselves, but most of them aren't that memorable, except the three-century-long ones, only because I was seriously tempted to skip them. But I'll say I mostly prefer that the Ultra hosts don't shout out their Ultra names while transforming (except Mebius. He can shout his name all he wants).

Spoilers, maybe. But nothing that will ruin the series, I hope. So I'm not separating the cut into individual shows. The Ultras are listed in the order their series aired, as far as I know.

Toys and more toys )

So maybe I should say something about the human form or host of each series (the main ones and Zero's)? I don't know, but let's just do it, then. I like to have excuses to talk about my favorite characters. (That means I probably might not limit myself to talking about the hosts/human forms only.) Unlike the above section, there are lots of spoilers and I don't mark them. Uneven length. For some I have paragraphs, and for some I have three sentences. How much I write is usually no indication of how much I like the host and/or the other characters, however.

Tiga: Take Me Higher )
Dyna: Ally of Justice )
Gaia: Beat on, Dream on )
Cosmos: Spirit )
Nexus: Hero )
Max: From Galaxy Faraway )
Mebius: Adorable, Adorable, Adorable )
UltraSeven X: Pay Money for My Pain )
Zero: 20,000 years too early )
Ginga: Future Ultraman )
X: Cyberspace Ultraman )
Orb: Wanderer Ultraman )
Geed: Adorkable Ultraman )
R/B: Ultraman Brothers )
Taiga: Tri-Squad Ultraman )
Z: Ultra Nerd )
And how much I enjoy a series is almost always directly proportional to how much I like its main character. I think only Nexus actually breaks that mold (but then I practically like most of the dunamists, so maybe there's that). I won't say which series I like more because I don't like to play favorites, though perhaps you can tell? I'm not all that objective anyway.

Started watching Gridman. I'd wanted to watch it for a while now, but was in no hurry since I thought that Gridman was just a computer program that the protagonist controlled via a remote or a computer console (or a keyboard). Anyway, have seen many people brought it up recently, in comparison to Ultraman Ginga (that his design might be based on Gridman (personally, I'm more reminded of the Jean brothers when looking at Gridman). And the protagonist and his friends are teenagers). (And I don't know if it's just a coincidence, but Gridman is voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa. Ultraman Ginga's human host is Hikaru Raidou.) So I was very curious with all the parallels and decided to check out the series.

In short, I like it a lot. Might be premature to say that with only five episodes in, since it usually takes a while for me to fall in love with the series I end up loving. But I think my favorable feeling will last, for reasons I'll mention under the cut.

More thoughts. Not really specific spoilers. )

For all the similarities, Gridman, in a way, is the opposite of Ultraman Ginga. Elaborations. Non-episode specific spoilers for both series. )

Wow, should have started watching this series a long time ago. But better late than never, I suppose. And waiting is good in this case since I can watch episode 1 with subtitles. :) Wish the rest of the series would be subbed, but so far I have no real trouble following the storyline.

Oh man, if nothing else, the theme song rocks big time.

It has been five years, but I used to write little comments on Ultraman Dyna episodes.

Episodes 1-7, Episodes 8-24, Episodes 25-36

Well, I found my notes for the rest of the episodes, so I'm going to post them up.

The following notes are not recent, so I can't actually remember much of what happen in the episodes, let alone if my notes are all that accurate. In any case, there will be spoilers.

Episodes 37-48 )

And I have something longer for the next two episodes: Episode 49 ) Episode 50 )

Episode 51 (a lot shorter comment than the previous two episodes). )

Not sure what happened, but, instead of most other series I mentioned in the previous entry, I somehow ended up starting Ultraman Gaia. And while I still think it is the best Heisei Ultraman series, Gaia is definitely slower in drawing me in than, say, Ultraman Dyna.

The main character in the first four episodes. )

Not about Gamu anymore, but there are not so few familiar faces (to me) in Ultraman Gaia. So far there is Kougami's actor (from Kamen Rider OOO) as Chief Tsutsumi. And perhaps he isn't around in the first four episodes, but Captain Serizawa's actor is the third pilot of Team Falcon. And and and Hassei Takano (Kamen Rider Raia) as Fujimiya.

I seem to be in an Ultraman-watching mood lately. It has been a while since I last felt this way.

Preparing for Ultraman Saga, sort of. )

Ah, this is too disjointed an entry. I don't even know what I'm trying to say here other than I probably won't have much time for other stuff on my too long to-watch list now that I'm preoccupied with the Ultras (specifically Dyna, Tiga, and Cosmos). I do wonder how long this phase will last, however, since I can very easily get bored (one of the reasons I can't really follow weekly stuff as they air***).

(***The only exception nowadays is Kamen Rider Wizard. I tried stocking up on episodes, but, nope, can't let a week pass without watching that week's episode. Doesn't help that I personally feel the series is only getting better and better (probably not a very popular opinion, but that's totally fine with me).)
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Daigo & Rena)
This is a little expansion on what I wrote as a comment in my previous entry on Ultraman Nexus. For spoiler reason, I would mark out names whenever I outright state them (most of the time, only when it might not be clear who I'm talking about). Most of the time I consider a couple canon only if there seem to be real compelling evidences that the show creators like me to think so. That said, there is no guarantee of accuracy of this list since I'm mostly going by memory, and I haven't seen some of these series recently.

Canon couples in Tiga, Dyna, Gaia, Cosmos, Nexus, Max, Mebius, UltraSeven X, and Ultra Galaxy... )

Open to corrections different opinions (and corrections on any misspelling on names, since I'm a bit tired to go look them up). But yeah, my definition of a canon couple might be too strict...

(Only one canon couple icon, I clearly have to get more...)

Being ill (not so much now) might (hopefully) explain why I can't make much head or tail of Ultraman Nice.

Random things which might be spoilers )

Oh well, not sure if I've seen all of the series (commercials), since the last one I saw seemed to have a preview for Tiga episode 29, I think. Anyway, I got them from Ultrafanz site (seems like I've gotten quite a few things from there lately).
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Umm... What??)
Wow, so I'm more than two years late (for the first season), but Ultra Galaxy is actually quite enjoyable, once I got a little more familiar with monsters fighting each other without transforming giant hero (well...so far).

Anyway, I breezed through 20 episodes in the past two days (up to episode 7 of NEO), though I don't think I'll continue at that fast a pace for the rest. Not sure if my katakana reading skill has gotten a bit better from reading all those monster cards, but I certainly can't remember much of them. (Only remember those I see often in other series and/or some of the ones in Ultraman Mebius.)

Random bits that might not make sense without watching the series and some other Ultra series (maybe not even then). Most likely spoilers for up to what I've seen... )

Toku guest stars in NEO whom I should recognize as soon as they appear on screen, but didn't. )

EDIT: Well, been looking a bit at Shouta Minami's blog and it seems he's going to appear in Ultraman Stage show in Osaka this June 5th (his entry (dated May 25th) says in around 10 days or so). And as an aside, he seems totally unlike Rei. (Yeah, I tend to think that actors have to be the same as their characters. ^^;;)

(Guess I'll just post this before I lose courage and scrap it...)

Let me preface this by saying I don't have any problem with Tsukasa's manners or lack thereof. He's totally fine the way he is. (And 'manner' probably isn't the word I'm looking for, but...)

I've seen KR Decade up to episode 27, and probably will cover a few things up to that point, but I will try not to spoil, and certainly not any important details.

So I re-watched the new Ultraman movie because I just got a soft sub (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] yamatoforever for telling me that sub exists for the new Ultraman movie). Not a hundred percent certain, but I believe this soft sub comes from UltramanLah, courtesy of Psyke. I'm passing it along in case someone else is looking for sub (though everyone who needs sub probably has already gotten it by now).

Well, since I already post, here are a little more thoughts on the movie:

Thoughts (spoilers) )
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Weird Purple)
Picked up the first volume of a Tiga comic today (seems like the cover says it's from Tony Wong Production--not that I'm too sure). I really didn't know what to expect except to read a story featuring Tiga, I think.

Mixed reactions; no real spoiler )
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Umm... What??)
(Torrent link for the raw, in case I'm not the last person to have seen this movie. Actually, I want the DVD, but I don't know when I can get it. :( I especially want the subtitles (the first movie has them, so this one should, too); Japanese subtitles are better than nothing.)

I didn't even plan to talk about this movie now (catching a few words in every three sentences is not good enough), but well, I have some thoughts anyway after seeing it this afternoon. This is done without reading a translation (if one exists), so mistakes are all my own.

Thoughts/Spoilers )

I'm sure I'd forgotten something. Oh well, I think I'll write more when I actually understand the dialogue... (And, yes, I know it's my journal, but I'm sorry if I sound too annoying about wanting to understand the movie. It's no pressure and no hurry for the subtitles. I simply find it frustrating for me personally when I try to learn Japanese and don't have much to show for it yet.)

Tokyo Friend Park 2: 09/15/2008

Because I can't resist after finish watching this episode, which is, I assume, to promote the Ultraman movie. Ultraman Tiga and Ultraman Mebius appear, as well as fake kaiju (Red King and Baltan).

Okay, I guess Tokyo Friend Park 2 is another variety show, a la NEP League (reminds me that I still want to hunt down the D-BOYS episodes), but probably needs less understanding of the Japanese. It surprised the heck out of me when it showed up on [livejournal.com profile] v6_unlimited. For obvious reason, other than the mention of Hiroshi Nagano (Daigo) and UM Tiga, the post didn't also tell me that Shunji Igarashi (Mirai) or Takami Yoshimoto (Rena or Hayata's daughter, haha) were in it. (I realized their appearances by reading the screencap.) I would have downloaded and watched even if there was only Nagano, of course, but it's all the better this way.

Go watch it if you haven't, because I've probably spoiled most of the episode under the cut.

40+ minutes of people consistently falling on their faces )

EDIT (many days later): Need more hints??? In an unlikely event that anyone still cares to play, the five yet still unidentified series are all listed on the interests on my profile. (Changed icon on the post, too; I couldn't be more obvious if I tried.)

(Original post below...)

And now, for a selfish post I do want to talk about...

I misplace the instructions for this meme, so here is my long intro instead. )

See which of these 16 series I can actually summarize )

Extras that rely on an ability to recognize these series in the first place. Then again, reading through some of these might help with the guessing a little. )

P.S. Take it if you like. If you are not on my friendslist but would like me to try guessing, please leave me a link to your post.

EDIT: I just noticed that series #8 (the animated movie version) has at least one song by both singers (Rina Aiuchi and U-ka Saegusa) who sing the EDs for UM Nexus. Well...they are friends, perhaps?
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Daigo & Rena)
Ultraman Tiga: The Final Odyssey (link contains spoilers) is a movie set after the events in the Ultraman Tiga TV series. This movie is one of my personal favorites (Daigo and Rena make such a cute couple), so I hope you enjoy if you take it. :)

Why do manga I read or toku I watch seem to have date(s) taking place in a zoo? I can't decide whether this is something I miss in the Japanese culture, or it's just mere coincidence that young Japanese couples seem to like going out to zoos. Anyway, I don't even know how to start looking up this information since it seems so specific.

A list of series under here, in case there might be slim chances of spoilers. )
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Weird Purple)
I should have a far more pleasant entry to write on the first anniversary of MEBIUS' ending, but more info on the new movie doesn't seem like very good news.

(This space was originally for what I really wanted to say.)

...But here are some random observations instead. Possible spoilers. )
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Fake Green)
Finished Dyna, so I've been watching Gaia. Man, this show is not subtle at all with its messages. In fact, I think it's more preachy than Cosmos. Basically, humans are the cause of everything bad happening on this earth, the reason evil creatures appear, the reason normally placid monsters attack Earth. More... )

I like these series (see tags), but I don't think they beat Gaia as an almost perfect series )
