I'm kind of not happy that I never win this Tokusatsu Heardle so far. Then again, I watch only Ultraman nowadays, so I'm not familiar with the usual toku songs. Maybe if Ultraman Heardle existed...
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Default)
Started watching Gridman. I'd wanted to watch it for a while now, but was in no hurry since I thought that Gridman was just a computer program that the protagonist controlled via a remote or a computer console (or a keyboard). Anyway, have seen many people brought it up recently, in comparison to Ultraman Ginga (that his design might be based on Gridman (personally, I'm more reminded of the Jean brothers when looking at Gridman). And the protagonist and his friends are teenagers). (And I don't know if it's just a coincidence, but Gridman is voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa. Ultraman Ginga's human host is Hikaru Raidou.) So I was very curious with all the parallels and decided to check out the series.

In short, I like it a lot. Might be premature to say that with only five episodes in, since it usually takes a while for me to fall in love with the series I end up loving. But I think my favorable feeling will last, for reasons I'll mention under the cut.

More thoughts. Not really specific spoilers. )

For all the similarities, Gridman, in a way, is the opposite of Ultraman Ginga. Elaborations. Non-episode specific spoilers for both series. )

Wow, should have started watching this series a long time ago. But better late than never, I suppose. And waiting is good in this case since I can watch episode 1 with subtitles. :) Wish the rest of the series would be subbed, but so far I have no real trouble following the storyline.

Oh man, if nothing else, the theme song rocks big time.
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Default)
Well, just got around to starting the new GARO. I guess I'm probably none too original in the few comments I have for it.

Spoilers for the episode, and a bit of speculations. )

I don't know. Perhaps one episode is too early to form impressions, good or bad. I think I'll give it a few more episodes, although I'm in no real hurry to continue.

ETA: Although I'm still slow in watching the episodes, I am on board with this series now. :)
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Default)
(Well, it's almost a month into 2013 already, so might as well put this up. I'm probably not going to be able to improve it even if I let it stay on my computer any longer.)

Ah, I did this meme two years ago. No longer remember where from the f-list I stole the meme from. ^^;

Mostly toku answers, I think. I'm kind of predictable this time around. )

So what's in store for me this year? More toku (or at least live-action), probably. Specifically, I'd like to watch more Ultraman, preferably newer stuff, but there seems to be no current TV series, as far as I know, other than Ultraman Retsuden. Either way, I'm still not up to date on the Ultras.
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it ("Another" Pierre)
(When was the last time I mentioned anything about tokusatsu? In fact, I'm not even sure when I last updated...)

More than half of this year has already passed, yet there is only one (not at all new) tokusatsu series I've watched. (Yes, that means I know nothing of the current toku.) Well, not even properly watched, but caught on TV whenever I felt like waking up early on the weekend. Which happened around three times this year so far. (One episode was caught for like 30 seconds -- yes, I'm completely serious. Since I had to leave, I couldn't finish it.)

I guess my 2-D love (anime) still outshines my 3-D love (live-action). Which is strange in any case since I don't watch anime (or anything else) all that much nowadays.

Well, this toku I mentioned earlier? Not easy (for me, not necessarily for anyone else) to understand to begin with, even if watched in order. And the way I did it, watching an episode randomly roughly every 2-3 months apart doesn't help the matter any.

So I think I might attempt to write up some summary for the latest episode I've seen of this not!mysterious toku series? But I'm not sure if I could make some sense out of it. (And this is not even the episode that confuses me the most -- that honor most likely goes to the time traveling/time paradox one which is probably a few episodes before this one.) Note that I am more likely to make stuff up (and/or mixing up events) than trying to give a summary of the actual content, but even then, it's probably unfair not to mention that there would be some spoilers in the strict sense of the word.

Dead lover and alive lover compete. Wait...they don't. )

Guessing game time? I guess not. )

EDIT: It's Ultraman Gaia. All I'm sure of is this particular episode is in the 30's.
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Perfectly Charming)
VS Three O'clock & Strawberry VS Takachin & Gin-san & the Jugem monkey
(The last two are all anime voice actor references, so blocked to keep up illusion.)

(Me: Several have already answered Today's Writer's Block for me, so I'm not answering it.
Gin: They have not answered for you. You just happen to like what they wrote.
Me: I don't like what they wrote. It's simply what I would have written as my answer.
Gin: That's nonsense right there.)

Part of my very long author's note that I just have to put somewhere before September 26. Every series mentioned by name is tagged, even if it is just one line (and/or in a censored form). Most of the mentions are just voice actor references, though. )

Still in dialog (but not necessarily in character), spoilers for Gintama episodes 225-226 (and mentions of 107-108 (I think?), 110). )
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Natsume & Nyanko-sensei)
From two anime series I watched this week (one line from each):

Cooking competition will always remind me of Delicious Gakuin.

For me, An-chan (big brother) is always going to be associated with Yamada Taro.

(Doubt any of these make sense to anyone not watching any of the episodes I watched... And perhaps they still wouldn't make any sense otherwise either. ^^;;)

And for Summer, not counting the two unnamed series (which hopefully will run past the summer) revealed under the cut (and in tags, of course), I think I'll be watching Ouran live-action (Alata as Hunny-senpai, do want. And I wanted Yusuke Yamamoto to be Tamaki ever since the drama was a rumor back in 2007) <--(maybe still rumored cast list? ETA on 28 June: Official cast list, yay. :) (Sorry for not correcting this earlier.) But I'll still watch even if there is no toku people I (sort of) know (or no one I know, period) in the cast) and Natsume San. Not active in either of these fandoms right now so I welcome the opportunity to get back into them. :)

After I wrote this entry, I went shopping and happened to pick up a magazine with the crossover of the two anime referenced on top of this entry. )

ETA like whoa (especially inside the cut). I should go now since this is over my lazy limit already...
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Book Voyage)
I feel like I'd already talked about most of this before in one form or another scattered around my journal, but anyway...

Why I write what I write? Or what make me pick which fandom to write for, out of all the ones I like? (Stolen from the discussion back in January on [livejournal.com profile] ffr_discussion (What gets you writing?))

gender-bend, main character, more than one source material, understandable situations and characters )

Browsing posts on [livejournal.com profile] help_japan (okay, only mostly the ones called 'Offering Interesting Stuff' ^^). What I find and what I kind of want. Probably boring so under the cut. )

And almost unrelated to the above, it seems the weekly toku shows will resume airing this week. :) Though I wish they continued to take the time off for as long as they need, I'll take this (and any other sort of return to normalcy) as an indication that the situation has gotten better (and I hope I'm not wrong about this).

Real life stuff )

More like note to self... )

(Tags are deceptive, by the way, because other than Otomen, they are mostly one-line references.)
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Cold Blue Texture)
(First entry posted with Chrome. I'm not exactly in love with it (I'm addicted to Poppit, though), but it seems less bloated than Firefox.)

Well, it has been more than a month since I last posted. The past month had been very eventful, and so is this month, but I am in dire need of a break, so here I am.

Anyway, it seems almost like a life time ago since I last watched a Japanese drama (I think Yamada Tarou was my last drama post, and I didn't even finished covering all the episodes ETA: Nope, it was BokuKano, according to the drama tag). I don't always write about series I've watched (or books I've read)--especially obscure, almost unheard of series I'm incredibly obsessed with, but Delicious Gakuin (DramaWiki link) had been on my list of things to watch for so long (and I mentioned once or twice on this journal that I wanted to watch it) I feel like I need closure by having a post when I finally finished watching it, even though what I have to say probably isn't as detailed as I like.

What's it about? )
Five toku actors are in this drama )
Notes on characters, which are like my impressions of them. Might contain spoilers, but no reference to any specific episode. )
Irrelevant tally of toku series represented... )

Next drama up (whenever I find a block of free time (not good at watching only 2-3 episodes at a time for finished series, though I did watch DeliGaku on and off), which probably is not in this week or next) most likely would be Princess Princess D, because, again, it seems to be one of those 23 minute long dramas (and only ten episodes, I think). But I might jinx it (by naming the series) and end up watching something else (happens almost all the time since I'm easily distracted ^^;;).
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Default)
Reading old threads on a show I just managed to catch up with and I'm uncomfortably reminded that, in addition to real life, I don't care for violence in my escape fictions either.

More of this not so upbeat stuff )
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Sailor)
I just re-read a manga where the hero hid his identity behind a mask and a wig and his love interest realized it was him from his voice alone (and he spoke only one line or two then). (She kept it a secret so he was still clueless and thought she didn't know.) It makes me wonder why most tokusatsu heroes could get away with not being recognized while not really doing anything to disguise their voices, or, for that matter, their speech patterns (no, I don't think simply changing from 'ore' to 'watashi' really counts). (Ultras don't usually speak much, and when they do, they seem to be pretty selective as to whom they direct their voices to, so okay, they are unlikely to get caught out by their voices alone.)

I missed Mebius's voice. )
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it ("Another" Pierre)
Life around here has slowly gone back to normal, so maybe I might post more than one post every four months...

Haven't been watching much toku or anything lately. (More than half a year behind on the weekly stuff.) I have the Ultra Galaxy movie, which I still haven't watched since I haven't really seen Ultra Galaxy, and I'm afraid I might be lost if I don't catch all the references (well, more like I don't want to get spoiled, at all).

Seiun Kamen Machineman )

I'll probably write more on Machineman, but that's all I have for now...

EDIT: Yeah, forgot, a subbed first episode of Machineman (not my link), in case anyone is interested in checking this series out, but I have to say I might be the last person to find out that it has been subtitled at all.

EDIT 2: (Um, next time I'll try one post per one show. And this would be the last edit I make, hopefully.)
Ah, some first season Ultra Galaxy subs (probably HK subs) actually exist (well, I've been out of touch for so long), so I guess I'll at least try watching the first few episodes, and will see how things go from there...
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Default)
...I probably have said something similar before, but I can only seem to find something to talk about when I notice a problem (or more) with a show/series. And that's only when I have an energy and can be bothered to do so, so perhaps some other problematic shows do get ignored by me. (Exception: If a show has no redeeming quality, I'm not going to waste time writing anything.) However, if the show is fabulous and seemingly does no wrong (well, strictly from my point of view), I smile and move on. (That's why I can never write any kind of pimp post.) And also, unless I know there are other people liking the same thing I do, I don't particularly want to be judged for admitting to liking this series or that series. I suppose I don't usually feel up to defending my taste. Case in point, 'genderbending, ecchi, harem' anime is not for everyone (actually, 'ecchi' and 'harem' are not even for me most of the time), but I'm watching Kämpfer, so...)

Back to the main topic of this post, I don't think Kämpfer is that well-known (though I don't think it's unknown either), but I would still cut detailed discussions, which may or may not be considered spoilers, just in case. (They are the type that make no sense to people not watching the series, and some people who do watch might not mind. Seriously though, how can anyone truly spoil an episode consisting of an almost neverending date taking up most of the episode? (Or 'nothing really happens' is considered a spoiler, then?))

And, if anyone is still interested, be forewarned that besides everything being Kämpfer-related from this point on (except the very last paragraph), my unnecessary Japanese quoting probably does not go over too well since I don't have the written script for the episode and just go by my limited understanding of the language. So I would say don't believe any of my quote and corresponding translation (if any) without verifying it.

I'm too amused to see-er-hear a (politer?) version of 'oboe teoke' in this anime. And while 'toorisugari no [whatever subject]' seems rather popular at the moment, I'm disappointed that there is nothing passing through in this anime. )

Stop ruining the mood already, Natsuru! )

Ordering around an anime (or other fictional) character who makes no secret he/she is fearful of you, imho, is hardly going to make him/her interested... )

Yeah, love is blind... )

Other random comments on the episode )

When a 'tsumaranai mono' is really a 'tsumaranai mono' :) )

Oh, well. I'll keep watching, I suppose. Real genderbending (though not one instance of it is in this episode other than OP and ED) anime (or live-action) are hard to come by so I don't get to be really choosy. But I'm not looking forward to taking almost two hours and a half to watch one 24 minute episode again, though.

(Not that anyone has asked or possibly will ask, but it took that long because I paused every few minutes in an (unsuccessful) attempt to forget the main chara's stupidity...)

I love the manga, though, and already bought all the volumes out. (Not volume 3, since I don't yet see it around where I live.) One thing I'm sad about is anime is pretty far ahead of manga already. Anime is based on Light Novel (seems like a popular practice lately to adapt anime from that source), which I might just try to read raw (since there is no translation). Or maybe not. I think out of all three, overall I prefer the manga the most.

And kind of inspired from way up above: power imbalance in a relationship. )
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Umm... What??)
I noticed this a few weeks back when a few series I watched at the time all had this in one form or another. Though it's probably not of much interest to anyone else besides me. ^^;;

Perhaps 'monster disguising itself as a pretty girl' is an effective story device, but I sure don't like it much. )
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Mirai)
Not quite randomly (considering I'm usually curious about actors in shows I watch), I came across Aiko Ito's travels blog(?) (Well, it is said "Updated News" at the top, but that probably just means her latest blog posts.)

My attempt at translating the newest entry. )

After seeing her as a heroine in a different toku show (which I had no idea and confess to not remembering her until I saw her blog) for all of last week, I have an urge to watch the first Mebius movie and episodes 43-44 again.
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Birca)
I didn't really plan to write about Go-Onger (feel like I don't know enough about sentai to talk about it), but I just got through the whole series like in five days, and found my feelings going up and down quite a lot throughout the course of the series. Yeah, there are spoilers, though I try to avoid mentioning them if I can.

Positives )

Not so positives )

What the latest three blue rangers have in common... )

I haven't seen the net movies (ETA: seen, and nothing really to say) or the Go-On seminar (not sure if it's new or just compilation of those segments--but I think I will watch it in any case), but yeah, did catch just about everything else. (Incidentally, was 2008 the first year to have net movies for sentai and rider? I don't remember any before that, but I might have overlooked them.)
sennetari: Floral with my journal name on it (Sailor)
Just some rambling, which is not the main point of this post at all. )

Anyway, I think I'll start with my out of date post listing tokusatsu actors' blogs from two and a half years ago. Seems like during that time, actors moved their blogs all over the place and half of the links there probably lead to nowhere (or nowhere near where they write their posts). Me not currently following blogs (no time) makes it more difficult to keep track. Anyway, I don't claim to be comprehensive or anything (there are probably better listings elsewhere; I just don't know where). This is very much a work in progress and would never be finished, I suppose, but hopefully I'll at least get to all the toku series I've seen, some day.

Lately, I'm feeling kind of left out, again. This time, it's not so much of me wondering if I'm a fan (I've decided that I am, even though I'm mostly silent), but more of my different takes on things.

Fanfics and fandom and my reactions to them. )

(Just to be clear, I'm not upset or anything. This is more of me wondering why.)
