I'm way happy that Shunji Igarashi is back in entertainment business. Whether he will ever return to play Mirai/Mebius, I wish him the best. And Happy Birthday, too. :)

So I don't know where all the above came from. (Gee, surely the Ultras don't talk like that. At least, I really hope Tiga and Dyna don't.) I only meant to talk about how I totally prefer human forms (or the form where the Ultra side is silent) over human hosts, but now I am not so sure. Some host/Ultra relationships are amazing, after all.

(Just seems like a silly disclaimer, but I've seen all of these series. If I don't mention something obvious (probably a lot of them), it means I either forget about it, don't want to be repetitive, or don't want to for spoiler reasons.)

Well, obviously every human host/form keeps quiet about the fact that they are Ultras. (Why do they? Why can't they tell people?) My question is more about other people. Do they remain clueless until the finale (or even beyond)? Or do they figure it out somehow?

Just going to do this with new series. I don't remember/still haven't seen some series before Tiga (and I thought, apart from very few exceptions, they usually didn't guess about the hero back then either). This is going to spoil the series mentioned, so if you don't want to know, you really should not proceed.

(Okay, you probably wonder who this person is who went silent for almost seven years. It's more likely that I'm talking to myself here, however. Anyway, went out for the first time this month on Friday and found that the outside world is still the same, so maybe I'll start posting again. Which might not be sustainable since I still don't really want to watch anything other than the Ultras, but never say never.)

Doing this from Ultraman Tiga onward, here are my personal opinions on transformation items the Ultra hosts use. (No, I don't own any, more's the pity.) Not counting the secondary Ultras, if any. I would comment on the transformation scenes themselves, but most of them aren't that memorable, except the three-century-long ones, only because I was seriously tempted to skip them. But I'll say I mostly prefer that the Ultra hosts don't shout out their Ultra names while transforming (except Mebius. He can shout his name all he wants).

Spoilers, maybe. But nothing that will ruin the series, I hope. So I'm not separating the cut into individual shows. The Ultras are listed in the order their series aired, as far as I know.

So maybe I should say something about the human form or host of each series (the main ones and Zero's)? I don't know, but let's just do it, then. I like to have excuses to talk about my favorite characters. (That means I probably might not limit myself to talking about the hosts/human forms only.) Unlike the above section, there are lots of spoilers and I don't mark them. Uneven length. For some I have paragraphs, and for some I have three sentences. How much I write is usually no indication of how much I like the host and/or the other characters, however.

And how much I enjoy a series is almost always directly proportional to how much I like its main character. I think only Nexus actually breaks that mold (but then I practically like most of the dunamists, so maybe there's that). I won't say which series I like more because I don't like to play favorites, though perhaps you can tell? I'm not all that objective anyway.

This is a little expansion on what I wrote as a comment in my previous entry on Ultraman Nexus. For spoiler reason, I would mark out names whenever I outright state them (most of the time, only when it might not be clear who I'm talking about). Most of the time I consider a couple canon only if there seem to be real compelling evidences that the show creators like me to think so. That said, there is no guarantee of accuracy of this list since I'm mostly going by memory, and I haven't seen some of these series recently.

Open to ~~corrections~~ different opinions (and corrections on any misspelling on names, since I'm a bit tired to go look them up). But yeah, my definition of a canon couple might be too strict...

Finally re-watched Ultraman Nexus, because I kept seeing a certain actress in other toku and not recognizing her was driving me nuts (seemed like she played against type). I came to the conclusion that she is not the cutest Nexus character, after all. Just that her love relationship is sweet.

Oh, yeah, other than that, some (probably not entirely objective) observations on the series in no particular order. No name is given because names probably mean nothing to those not watching, and if they are familiar with Nexus hopefully they can infer who are being referred to.

There might be more, but that's all I can think of at this point.

(Pretty much caught up with Kamen Rider Double (well I watched it on and off switching with Ultraman Max, which is why they are the two series I'll use as bases in this post), but yeah, can't seem to write thoughts on the episodes (this is where I confess that my latest two entries on W were somewhat delayed postings), so I leave that and do something different.)

Mostly for my reference. I doubt it would make much sense to anyone other than me...especially since I only bother to use character names (sometimes not even that) and not real names.

Wow, so I'm more than two years late (for the first season), but Ultra Galaxy is actually quite enjoyable, once I got a little more familiar with monsters fighting each other without transforming giant hero (well...so far).

Anyway, I breezed through 20 episodes in the past two days (up to episode 7 of NEO), though I don't think I'll continue at that fast a pace for the rest. Not sure if my katakana reading skill has gotten a bit better from reading all those monster cards, but I certainly can't remember much of them. (Only remember those I see often in other series and/or some of the ones in Ultraman Mebius.)

Random bits that might not make sense without watching the series and some other Ultra series (maybe not even then). ( Most likely spoilers for up to what I've seen... )

( Toku guest stars in NEO whom I should recognize as soon as they appear on screen, but didn't. )

EDIT: Well, been looking a bit at Shouta Minami's blog and it seems he's going to appear in Ultraman Stage show in Osaka this June 5th (his entry (dated May 25th) says in around 10 days or so). And as an aside, he seems totally unlike Rei. (Yeah, I tend to think that actors have to be the same as their characters. ^^;;)

Why do manga I read or toku I watch seem to have date(s) taking place in a zoo? I can't decide whether this is something I miss in the Japanese culture, or it's just mere coincidence that young Japanese couples seem to like going out to zoos. Anyway, I don't even know how to start looking up this information since it seems so specific.

Finished Dyna, so I've been watching Gaia. Man, this show is not subtle at all with its messages. In fact, I think it's more preachy than Cosmos. Basically, humans are the cause of everything bad happening on this earth, the reason evil creatures appear, the reason normally placid monsters attack Earth. ( More... )

I'm currently watching Ultraman Cosmos TV series (I'm up to episode 44 at the moment. What can I say? It's very addictive, though I think it's probably an acquired taste), and it occurs to me that Musashi doesn't seem to be able to conceal his secret identity very well. I wonder why he bothers to hide it at all. His personality seems the type, if not to boast, to mention what he does. He constantly says things like he would not run away, he needs power, strength, etc., both to himself and to other people.

Yes, I'm doing the Year in Review thing since I'd been seeing it so much. To make it worth your while (subjective opinion, of course ^^;;), I'm also going to comment briefly on each month.

In other news, and the main reason I'm posting, I received Daisuke Watanabe (George in Mebius)'s tenimyu photoset in the mail today. I'm so very happy right now, I just have to share. However, it's probably not the best scanning job since I'm not familiar with the scanner I'm using and I don't think I've ever scanned photos before. (There are a lot of white specks on the dark background, for instance, but I tried my best.)

Well, I hope at least one more person other than me like these photos. :)

I've seen some comments that the new tenimyu seem to be good, but I don't know anything about it beyond that.

As a side note, I want to buy Rasshii's OOO photosets (and possibly a few other D-BOYS'), if I know where to order them. (Trying to avoid auctions if I can, but may have to as a last resort.)

Watched Seven X 7 and Mebius 16 back to back so I'll just put them in one post. Besides, I don't seem to have much to say, and what little I can find to write about don't seem too sensible (I'm not even sorry that that I laughed in all inappropriate places for both episodes). Also saw Ultra Galaxy 1 last week, and I seem to be in the minority in not enjoying it much.

Well, this post turns out to be so disjointed. I clearly need some sleep.

...well, not exactly. This post is actually more random than the previous post on the same subject. I just think I've got more or less an acceptable answer at last to what exactly makes a tokusatsu show.

( Not a lot of new material here. Again with no real research to back up my reasoning. So in no way this thing is a meta, if I actually understand (which I doubt) what a meta is. It is just way too scattered. ) ( Exceptions, or perhaps unclear cases )

In conclusion, to make my life simpler, I should probably just go with my so-called marketing theory. If the company making the show identify their show as toku, then tokusatsu it is for me.
