Okay, I'm sure the reference had been mentioned before (around the time Ultraman Mebius was still airing, perhaps), but until I saw episode 13 of Ultraman 80, it hadn't really clicked with me where 'Formation Yamato' came from. ( More... )

Yes, I'm watching Ultraman 80 (and skipping almost every series before it). ( A few general thoughts, not really spoilers. )

Not sure what happened, but, instead of most other series I mentioned in the previous entry, I somehow ended up starting Ultraman Gaia. And while I still think it is the best Heisei Ultraman series, Gaia is definitely slower in drawing me in than, say, Ultraman Dyna.

Not about Gamu anymore, but there are not so few familiar faces (to me) in Ultraman Gaia. So far there is Kougami's actor (from Kamen Rider OOO) as Chief Tsutsumi. And perhaps he isn't around in the first four episodes, but Captain Serizawa's actor is the third pilot of Team Falcon. And and and Hassei Takano (Kamen Rider Raia) as Fujimiya.

Umm. I've listed almost everything I've seen with Marina Inoue doing voice work in. Would include TTGL, but I don't think it really fits any category here. Besides, I've finished everything (well, specials and movies don't count) on the list (except the 'not get into' one and the two on-going ones--which I'm current as far as subs go).

Well, not really feel like I can make specific comments on the episodes themselves, so I want to talk about the voice actors instead. Assume (hopefully not very specific) spoilers for the series in tags under the cut.

So, to sum it up, I like having (hearing) anime voice actors (from anime I'm at least familiar with) doing voices for tokusatsu shows. However, I guess I just like clinging to familiarity. For one single character (not possessed nor having split personalities or something I haven't thought of), when the voices across the different forms don't match, it is a little jarring to me and more often than not leads me to believe that the human form and the non-human form are two separate characters (unless the human form actor is very very good and/or the suit actor for the non-human form is very very good and/or the voice actor for the non-human form is very very good)...

Since in my previous entry on canon couples (albeit my interpretation of canon, which is not always accurate or anything), Mirai/Ryuu keep coming up in the comments (^__^), so I guess I'll have another entry just for Mebius. :)

Just a disclaimer right off the bat, I'm not exactly a shipping person (I guess I've made some progression from 'not comfortable talking about shipping' if I'm making this entry and the previous one), but I'm curious anyway so I can't help posting. So I would appreciate corrections if I've misused terms or something. (Actually, this disclaimer should also be right on top of the canon couple entry, but I really hadn't thought of it then.)

--Wait, I'm not listing my ship(s)? Ah, as I said, I'm not really a shipper, but I love Mirai/Ryuu and am pretty open to other possible pairings (and/or...well, whatever you call three or more people (or things) in the same relationship) I've seen (or might think I have seen) in fics.

(And when I use '/', it really doesn't matter to me who is more 'dominant' in a particular relationship. I guess I should find a better way to simply list off the people (and/or the things) involved without any concerns about that kind of thing.)

This is a little expansion on what I wrote as a comment in my previous entry on Ultraman Nexus. For spoiler reason, I would mark out names whenever I outright state them (most of the time, only when it might not be clear who I'm talking about). Most of the time I consider a couple canon only if there seem to be real compelling evidences that the show creators like me to think so. That said, there is no guarantee of accuracy of this list since I'm mostly going by memory, and I haven't seen some of these series recently.

Open to ~~corrections~~ different opinions (and corrections on any misspelling on names, since I'm a bit tired to go look them up). But yeah, my definition of a canon couple might be too strict...

Finally re-watched Ultraman Nexus, because I kept seeing a certain actress in other toku and not recognizing her was driving me nuts (seemed like she played against type). I came to the conclusion that she is not the cutest Nexus character, after all. Just that her love relationship is sweet.

Oh, yeah, other than that, some (probably not entirely objective) observations on the series in no particular order. No name is given because names probably mean nothing to those not watching, and if they are familiar with Nexus hopefully they can infer who are being referred to.

There might be more, but that's all I can think of at this point.

(Pretty much caught up with Kamen Rider Double (well I watched it on and off switching with Ultraman Max, which is why they are the two series I'll use as bases in this post), but yeah, can't seem to write thoughts on the episodes (this is where I confess that my latest two entries on W were somewhat delayed postings), so I leave that and do something different.)

Mostly for my reference. I doubt it would make much sense to anyone other than me...especially since I only bother to use character names (sometimes not even that) and not real names.

Okay, I have my name association again, even though this time I really shouldn't, since, well...the character I think of hasn't appeared much in that other series.

Anyway, let's just get it out of the way that I'm rather disappointed with the way everything eventually turns out, even though in some way it strangely fits and is consistent with how the character would have (re)acted.

ETA: That 'betrayed hundreds time' line doesn't even originate from that series but from an older series. And I wonder why I'm still keeping this a secret anyway since it's probably like saying characters A, B, C but then describing them in a way that leaves no doubt as to where they come from.

ETA 2: So I'm done with being cryptic. The line comes from an older Ultraman series, according to Ultraman Mebius. And, from what

honou_no_izumi told me, apparently it has also been used in Kamen Rider series, especially in Kamen Rider Blade.

Well, possibly I'm thinking too much. But I'm curious. So if anyone is so inclined...

Since I sort of promised myself that I would finish episode 12 summary, I finally did, almost three years later. But, too lazy to type, I haven't exactly used all of my 11 pages of handwritten notes... (Next time I'll watch on computer and takes note on notepad, that is, if I can survive 4 hours at the computer without mosquitoes sucking my blood dry...which they almost succeeded today.)

So here goes the summary that picks up right from where I last left off, but more detailed and hopefully with less mistakes, story-wise.

Conclusion: watching the episode yourself is probably a lot more fun...

As I might not have made very apparent, I finished Ghost Rebirth (or Reverse, though Rebirth seems to make more sense to me) and the movie. Don't have detailed thoughts right now, other than they are spectacular works. ( A little bit of non-specific spoilers for both. )

In any case, I do want both of these on DVDs (especially since the movie has English subtitles which, while are not exact, I guess I can understand why they were done that way), but that will have to wait a while until money is not so tight.

I just re-read a manga where the hero hid his identity behind a mask and a wig and his love interest realized it was him from his voice alone (and he spoke only one line or two then). (She kept it a secret so he was still clueless and thought she didn't know.) It makes me wonder why most tokusatsu heroes could get away with not being recognized while not really doing anything to disguise their voices, or, for that matter, their speech patterns (no, I don't think simply changing from 'ore' to 'watashi' really counts). (Ultras don't usually speak much, and when they do, they seem to be pretty selective as to whom they direct their voices to, so okay, they are unlikely to get caught out by their voices alone.)

Wow, so I'm more than two years late (for the first season), but Ultra Galaxy is actually quite enjoyable, once I got a little more familiar with monsters fighting each other without transforming giant hero (well...so far).

Anyway, I breezed through 20 episodes in the past two days (up to episode 7 of NEO), though I don't think I'll continue at that fast a pace for the rest. Not sure if my katakana reading skill has gotten a bit better from reading all those monster cards, but I certainly can't remember much of them. (Only remember those I see often in other series and/or some of the ones in Ultraman Mebius.)

Random bits that might not make sense without watching the series and some other Ultra series (maybe not even then). ( Most likely spoilers for up to what I've seen... )

( Toku guest stars in NEO whom I should recognize as soon as they appear on screen, but didn't. )

EDIT: Well, been looking a bit at Shouta Minami's blog and it seems he's going to appear in Ultraman Stage show in Osaka this June 5th (his entry (dated May 25th) says in around 10 days or so). And as an aside, he seems totally unlike Rei. (Yeah, I tend to think that actors have to be the same as their characters. ^^;;)
